Tips and Ideas

Read with your child

As you read with your child point to each word with your finger showing there is a match between the spoken and written word.

Even very young children enjoy the experience of sitting with you and looking at bright pictures of everyday things they recognise, such as animals or toys. Read a book with your child and talk about the pictures.

Find time to read aloud with your child every day. Typically, parents play an important role in developing this skill showing how important reading is to their daily life.

Phonics

By selecting 5 words that begin with the same letter, children can learn how to make that letter sound. e.g Cat, Car, Candle, Cake, Castle.
